What is it about a place that elicits a certain reaction such as the nostalgia felt during a dreamy stroll across a bridge in the early hours of a foggy morning;
the soothing image of a curtain blowing in the summer breeze;
the coziness of the family pet curled up in his favorite spot;

the WOW of a spiraling staircase glimpsed through a slightly open door
or the memories of lazy summer afternoons on a porch swing.

All these places admired for their beauty and uniqueness evoke a reaction from each of us that goes beyond what we observe. I believe that we react because they remind us of happy moments in our lives, of events shared with loved ones and friends, of sheer joy, of comfort and of that feeling of security or continuity that we all strive to create in our lives. Although we cannot always control the events in our lives, and we can never predict the future with certainty, we continually try to create some sense of security in our homes. In the December 2010 issue of Veranda Magazine Gloria Vanderbilt was quoted as once saying that, “A home should be the one place where you have control.” In a world where we spend a lot of energy running after time, the home is the last place where time can actually stand still, if only briefly.
I like to call the reaction that these places or moments evoke within us, “a feeling of coming Home.” It is a feeling that makes us want to let our hair down, walk barefoot on the carpet, or have a smoke and pour a drink to go with it. These are rare moments when we can let it all hang out.
All these images I shared with you on this post make me think of home and how it should make me feel and in the famous words of Judy Garland in the Wizard of Oz, “There’s no place like home.”
I wish that you always find your way back home and to the loved ones waiting for you there.
